" Ben and Baba" - a story of father
and son
Steve Ben Israel made his performing debut in the late 1950s
as a comedian in the Greenwich coffee house renaissance, working
alongside Bob Dylan , Peter & Mary and many others. In the
late 1970s he developed an unique style of solo performance and
ever since he performed pieces at New York venues including The
Kitchen and the Puffin Room. "Nonviolent executions"is
the title of his most recent production.
His son BABA is a Hip Hop performing and recording artist. This
year he performed on Broadway at the New Victory Theater. He is
a founding member of Playback Theater NYC, a group that performs
in hospitals, prisons and shelters.
The film concentrates on the charismatic personalities of the
two protagonists.
Father and son are each representing another generation of rebellion
and the art of survival in the jungle of the moloch Big Apple.
Ben and Baba have a very special relationship with each other,
the film will enter into her inner thoughts, their poetry and
lyrics, their encounters with black jazz and Hip Hop artists in
a city that is still suffering from the aftermaths of ground zero.
Ben says: " I conduct seances to contact the living!"
Baba says: " I am too terrified to be terrrified by terrorism."
